3D Movement Assessment vs. a Traditional Physical Exam
Why we fix the dysfunction, not just chase the pain, and how motion-capture technology makes that possible.
Most physical exams follow the same script: the clinician watches you move, tests your range of motion by hand, and asks where it hurts. That approach works for obvious injuries, but it has a real limitation. It relies entirely on what the human eye can catch in real time, and a lot of movement dysfunction is subtle.
What a Traditional Exam Can Miss
Small asymmetries between your left and right side. A hip that compensates for a stiff ankle. A shoulder that's overworking because the mid-back isn't rotating properly. These patterns are often exactly what's driving your pain, and they're easy to miss when you're relying on observation alone.
How a 3D Movement Assessment Is Different
We use Kinetisense, a motion-capture system that measures your joint angles and movement patterns objectively, in three dimensions, as you move. Instead of an educated guess about your range of motion, we get precise data, and a clear picture of exactly where your body is compensating.
That data doesn't replace clinical judgment; it sharpens it. Dr. Lovelace still examines you and talks through your history; the assessment just adds an objective layer most clinics don't have access to.
Why This Matters for Treatment
If your treatment plan only targets where it hurts, you're often chasing a symptom while the actual cause (a movement compensation somewhere else) keeps producing it. A 3D movement assessment lets us build a plan aimed at the source, which is why patients often see results holding up longer than with symptom-only treatment.
